The BBC Misquotes Martin Luther KIng on MLK Day

The BBC labels this 1964 video as Dr. King predicting an African American president "in less than 40 years", but in fact Dr. King relates that a more optimistic prediction of "25 years or less". Dr. King explains his optimism as being born by the pace of civil rights change that he had observed in the country over the prior two years. The 40 year quote is actually from Robert Kennedy according the interviewer.

I'm evaluating a multi-media course on blogging from the folks at Simpleology. For a while, they're letting you snag it for free if you post about it on your blog.

It covers:

  • The best blogging techniques.
  • How to get traffic to your blog.
  • How to turn your blog into money.

I'll let you know what I think once I've had a chance to check it out. Meanwhile, go grab yours while it's still free.

FIRST, DRIVE THE CAR!

I'm eating some dinner, and CRASH! Not squeal-crash mind you. I rush outside, and no one is seriously hurt. A driver of a Subaru Legacy wagon (is there any other kind of car in Bozeman?) drove right into my neighbors parked trailer, which then smashed into the parked car in front of it. The driver's explanation of what happened was "my dog vomited on me". Sure enough, there was a small rodent-style dog hyper-hopping on the drivers seat.

I was polite, but I was suppressing an urge to bitch-slap this driver. Add a distracted child to the mix and this would have been a tragedy.

So the Nuclei Driving Rule #1 is:

First, drive the car!

I don't care if your dog coughs up its cookies into your lap, a bee stings your ear, or aliens are communicating to you through the car radio; your first responsibility is to drive the car. If something else is demanding your attention, stop the car, and THEN deal with the dog vomit.

Rest

For me Sunday is a day to rest. The Maximum guy and I floated down the Madison river yesterday. I had an interesting episode on the river, I grounded, and Max lighter by about 160 pounds did not, and went floating on downstream. Having basically grown up on the ocean, I think no problem I will swim downstream and catch up with my son. Well guess what you can't swim worth a darn in four to ten inch water, and the loose slippery rocks don't afford enough purchase to run on.

So Max went downstream until someone pulled him over to the bank to wait. He wasn't in danger, he swims well, had a lifevest securely on, and was riding his innertube, but he didn't like getting separated from his dad.

It was a perfect day for tubing down the Madison, which means it was too damn hot for Montana.

Here are some pictures of the Madison for the unitiated:
